Meet Greenfire Earth, an unusual 8.5ct Australian boulder opal where brilliant precious colour seems to emerge directly from a richly textured landscape of natural ironstone.
The polished face is dominated by warm rust, ochre and deep earthy brown, with an intricate natural pattern running throughout the matrix. Look closer and scattered seams and pockets of precious opal begin to reveal themselves, creating an almost hidden-treasure quality across the stone.
Its strongest flashes are an exceptionally lively emerald and lime green, bursting into view as the stone moves through the light. Between them appear smaller sparks of electric blue, turquoise and yellow-gold, with some angles revealing concentrated blue-green patches against the darker areas of ironstone.
What makes this piece particularly appealing is the way the colour changes across the surface. From one direction it appears predominantly earthy and understated; turn it slightly and suddenly brilliant green fire illuminates the natural pattern. The opal continues around parts of the curved surface too, giving the stone interest from several viewing angles.
At 13 x 19mm, its softly rounded freeform shape is a very wearable size while still having enough presence to show off the intricate matrix and flashes of colour. It would make a distinctive pendant or an impressive organic-style statement ring, particularly in a setting designed to complement its warm Australian earth tones.
