Meet Desert Horizon, a beautifully distinctive natural Australian boulder opal weighing 13.6 carats and measuring approximately 24mm x 18mm.
The front face is dominated by rich burnt orange and warm earthy tones, with natural flowing lines running through the ironstone. Its standout feature is a fine streak of precious opal that comes alive with flashes of blue and blue-green as the gemstone is moved through the light. Pale opal veining travels across the surface alongside the colour, creating an intricate natural pattern against the warm orange ground.
The contrast between the cool blue colour and the surrounding burnt-orange ironstone gives this stone its distinctive character. Depending on the angle and lighting, the blue streak can appear subtle before suddenly catching the light with a much brighter flash.
Turn Desert Horizon over and the reverse face reveals an entirely different landscape. Horizontal bands of chocolate brown, ochre, rust and orange sweep across the stone, resembling layers of ancient earth or distant desert horizons. The natural banding gives the reverse a wonderfully geological quality and makes it an attractive feature in its own right.
Polished on both sides, this is a gemstone with two very different personalities: vivid orange ironstone accented by precious blue opal on the front, and beautifully layered natural earth tones on the reverse.
At 13.6 carats, with a substantial 24mm x 18mm face and a strong rectangular freeform shape, Desert Horizon would make a striking centrepiece for a bespoke pendant or statement ring. A custom setting could also be designed to retain visibility of the patterned reverse.
It is available to purchase as a loose gemstone or can be selected for commission work with our silversmith.

Please note: Opal colours and patterns can appear different depending on the lighting and viewing angle. Every natural opal is unique.
