Meet Ancient Mosaic, an impressive 40-carat Australian boulder opal measuring approximately 23mm x 20mm.
This substantial gemstone is dominated by an extraordinary natural matrix pattern. Warm burnt-orange, caramel and chocolate-brown tones twist into intricate loops, cells and fragmented shapes, giving the stone an appearance reminiscent of an ancient mosaic or weathered archaeological landscape.
Hidden amongst this earthy pattern are pockets and fine traces of precious opal. As the stone is moved through the light, bright electric blues, turquoise, violet and occasional green flashes suddenly emerge from between areas of darker matrix. Some are tiny pinpoints while others form stronger streaks and patches, making the colour something that reveals itself gradually rather than overwhelming the natural character of the stone.
One face displays the strongest interplay between the patterned host rock and precious opal, with particularly attractive blue flashes appearing through the upper and lower sections. The high polish and rounded cabochon surface give the stone considerable depth and bring out the warm amber-brown tones beautifully.
The opposite side is much more subdued, showcasing the fascinating sandstone-like conglometrate with its densely packed organic patterning and warm golden-brown colour. This side is attractive primarily for its geological structure rather than play-of-colour and provides a wonderful contrast to the more colourful display face.
At 40 carats, Ancient Mosaic has considerable presence.
Its compact 23 x 20mm proportions and softly irregular outline could make an exceptional statement ring, while its weight and fascinating natural pattern would also lend themselves beautifully to a substantial pendant.
This isn't a stone that relies solely on brilliant colour. Its appeal comes from the combination of ancient-looking Australian host rock, intricate natural pattern and unexpected flashes of precious opal appearing as the gemstone moves.
